What are typical boarding school classes?

I’m writing a story about a boarding school, but I’ve never been to one so…
Classes, sure I need to know that, but tell me everything you know about boarding school! Even if it’s totally obvious!

Ok, so boarding school is actually super cool. Most kids aren’t sent there because they’ve been horrible or whatever, a lot actually want to go.

Classes are generally the same as your regular high school, but the focus is more on discussions rather than just busy work. For example, in a normal high school English class you may have tons of vocabulary tests, grammar stuff, etc. but in a boarding school you’d have discussions on the meaning of the book. In my 10th grade Humanities class, our final was a paper and the question was "Based on all the sources we’ve used this year (books, movies, journals, etc.) do you believe that humanity is essentially good or bad?". Stuff like that.

The food is horrible. The end.

Rooming with people is fun, but incredibly messy. My roommate and I spent 3 hours cleaning our room one Saturday night (we got in trouble for being too messy and had to stay inside).

A lot of the time, there’s nothing to do, so you have to come up with really creative things. Duck-taping people to walls, the ‘narrow’ jump, rearranging someone’s room while they’re on weekend leave, etc.

One last thing; friends become really close. Like I say really mean things I totally wouldn’t say to someone back home, and my roommate just says "You’re a bitch." and goes back to doing homework. It’s more like you’re sisters than just regular friends.

Hope this helps!

  1. same as regular school…

boarding just means you don’t go home at nite, so they may have more clubs or extracurricular activities to help the students stay busy

  2. Same as other schools in most cases, unless the school has some extra agenda like religion or second language. My sister went to one for grades 4-7 and the classes were exactly the same as what I had at my school. A friend of mine, on the other hand, attended a French school in New York for two years, which basically meant almost all classes were taught in French rather than English, or were bilingual.

  3. Watch Zoey 101. That will give you a rough idea, although boarding school is nowhere near as cushy and comfy. Not all students have huge flat screen TVs and laptops. Basically you stay there all the time, roommates, meal times, etc.
