What is boarding school like and does anyone know any good boarding schools on England?

Posted on February 15th, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 3 Comments »

I am going to boarding school next year for college and have applied for a few but I have not found one that I really like. Does anyone go to or know of any good boarding schools in england preferably with sailing or horse riding.

Also what is it like at boarding school and what do you do in your free time if the school is no where near a town?

I assume you are thinking of boarding just for the last two years? If so, entry is super competitive for the better schools as they boost their A’level results with their sixth form intake giving generous scholarships.

You don’t say if you want all girls or mixed and you don’t say whether you will be a weekly boarder or not. Many (maybe even most) boarding school children go home at the weekends. If you do, you will not have time for riding or sailing.

The Times publishes the ranking of the best private schools in the country. Not all offer boarding but most do. Some (Eton for instance) have no Sixth form intake at all. They also take only boys so forget that one.

For an amazing last two years, it would be hard to beat Westminster which is boys only till Sixth form and is located in the heart of central London. Very hard to get into. No sailing or riding.

If you want all girls, Wycombe Abbey or Cheltenham Ladies would be pretty good choices. Wycombe Abbey is in the centre of High Wycombe and walking distance from a 30 minute train journey to London so you won’t be bored. They have sailing but it is a joke because it is on a lake and the riding is not serious either.

What are you thoughts on sending children to boarding school as young as age 8?

I am writing a letter advising parents on how to prepare their child for the move to boarding school at a young age as part of my English AS coursework, and would really appreciate some feedback! :) thanks!

cruel. most cruel, as children are too young at this age. they need their parents’ love and guidance. If the children absolutely have to move, they will break down in most cases. 8 is a much too young age to consider boarding school. Let them grow up, learn to take care of themselves without their parents’ constant nagging, and then they’ll be ready for boarding school.

For your letter help, you could refer to the Bollywood movie, ‘Taare Zameen Par’. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taare_Zameen_Par . This focuses mainly on dyslexia, and also on the life of a boarding school and how it affects the child.

What are typical boarding school classes?

Posted on February 10th, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 4 Comments »

I’m writing a story about a boarding school, but I’ve never been to one so…
Classes, sure I need to know that, but tell me everything you know about boarding school! Even if it’s totally obvious!

Ok, so boarding school is actually super cool. Most kids aren’t sent there because they’ve been horrible or whatever, a lot actually want to go.

Classes are generally the same as your regular high school, but the focus is more on discussions rather than just busy work. For example, in a normal high school English class you may have tons of vocabulary tests, grammar stuff, etc. but in a boarding school you’d have discussions on the meaning of the book. In my 10th grade Humanities class, our final was a paper and the question was "Based on all the sources we’ve used this year (books, movies, journals, etc.) do you believe that humanity is essentially good or bad?". Stuff like that.

The food is horrible. The end.

Rooming with people is fun, but incredibly messy. My roommate and I spent 3 hours cleaning our room one Saturday night (we got in trouble for being too messy and had to stay inside).

A lot of the time, there’s nothing to do, so you have to come up with really creative things. Duck-taping people to walls, the ‘narrow’ jump, rearranging someone’s room while they’re on weekend leave, etc.

One last thing; friends become really close. Like I say really mean things I totally wouldn’t say to someone back home, and my roommate just says "You’re a bitch." and goes back to doing homework. It’s more like you’re sisters than just regular friends.

Hope this helps!

How can I convince my parents to let me go to boarding school?

Posted on February 6th, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 3 Comments »

I really want to go to boarding school next year when I go to Grade 8. The school I go to is horrible and the kids spread all these nasty rumors about me. I think that boarding school would be much better, I was thinking of going to Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Please help. I don’t want to tell me parents about the nasty rumors because they’ll just get involved and then the kids there will be really mad. They’re all rich kids whose parents don’t care what they do, so who knows what they’ll do to me?

Best advice I can give, is to not run away from your problems. Boarding school can be a great experience, but your parents won’t understand why you want to go, until they really understand what your goals are.

My daughter is applying to boarding herself next year, but she’s been pretty up-front why she wants to go: to get a better education. She found a blog and coincidentally the student and parent that are writing the blog, just wrote an article on convincing parents… You might find it helpful and relevant to your situation as well.

Hello, I m parent, my ward is studying @ DPS Pinjore. Family stays in UP. As it is much far from the place we live, i m planning to shift him in somewhere near from home. If some one can suggest which boarding school in or near UP will be better will be just great.

Thanks

Any boarding school, all are same – staff has same qualification – & fee you can afford.Near U.P. i.e. in Uttranchal "Sherwood" at Nanital is good.

What should I ask to the head of admissions about boarding school?

Posted on January 29th, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 1 Comment »

Okay I’m going to a boarding school next year. And I want to seem really interested and really into he school and I need to ask some questions about the school so I won’t be rude. I can’t exactly come up with any questions, so I’m hoping you can help me come up with some good questions to ask, so they will like me and I will get into the school.

May I ask what school? Most U.S. boarding schools don’t make admissions decisions until March 10, so I was just wondering how you could be absolutely sure.

Be yourself when talking, they’ll probably ask you more questions than you’ll need to ask them. But, given the chance, ask if the things you are passionate about are available to you at the school, what the general morale is of the students, what you do for fun, how many day vs. boarding students, what foreign languages they offer, etc.

Hope I helped!

What themes to use for your room at boarding school?

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 2 Comments »

Hey I’m at boarding school and I have a little room in there with a little desk and a little wardrobe. There is a single bed and a little pin board. You are aloud to spice it up a bit but you can’t the walls and stuff. It’s kind of sad walking into a dull bedroom when you don’t get to see your parents everyday. Lol. Any themes? I’m 13 and a girl.

Hi there… wow, you own room… in the lower grades we have 12 in a dorm… its horrid …but what you describe is almost the same the world over… oh I’m Chantal and I’m 16 and at an all girls school in Cape Town South Africa…

Next year we have rooms with 4s and 2s… I can’t wait… but hey I know how you feel. But we are allowed some posters (and long as the person is fully dressed and with do swearing or .. LOL) and a frame with photos on our desks and things… not much scope with us though until next year… oh and I know how it feels about missing your family…
So for some ideas are you allowed:

1) posters that you can put up with press-stick and easily take down without pulling the paint off? (are u allowed these). Best to go for the mountain or lake views and not your fav ROCK group in their jeans only smashing their equipment, or Britney Spears with almost nothing on… ;)

2) a nice vase, and you can pick flowers or leaves on the weekends

3) do you have a desk light?… can you perhaps also get another nice desk standing light with a nice shade (or change your shade) so it makes a nice softer light when you not studying – so you can CHANGE the mood!!!

4) photo frame with pic of family

5) music – are you allowed and then can you get a small cheaper CD player – get some relaxed type of music?

So the theme I would go for is – ‘Inspirational’ – like nature, tranquil and calm – with lighting that can be lower when not working, a few posters of nature, some natural flowers / leaves in a vase. You will need to collect these over time… what do you think?

6) finally, do you / can you use a computer in your room? or even if not and you can obvious get to work on a compute as you now on Answers – BUT I found helped tons was to setup my own FLICKR site and stared with just a few photos from holidays or family… this gave be a whole other public and private (as you can limit who can see what) world I could share… I now have photos of mountains, the sea, my school, my room at home and I get many visitors to comment and share nice things. See my flickr oh please don’t tell me how we look like chocolate bars in our brown and beige uniforms … and no it’s NOT a MILITARY school lol. See – http//www.flickr.com/photos/chantalslife !!! as it is something I’m very proud of!!!

oh you can also contact me to say hi… I’m on- chantal2009@gmail.com (don’t use yahoo mail… it is blocked by the school – sob!), bye for now, hope this helped. Chantal

What are the pros and cons of going to boarding school?

Posted on January 20th, 2010 by admin in boarding school | 4 Comments »

How do you know you’ve chosen a good boarding school? Is single sex or co-ed boarding schools better?

The pro’s of boarding school are quite obvious. The education is the best education you can get at any school. The individualized education and the dedicated teachers is why someone should really go to a private school. I went to boarding school for 3 years. I never got home sick and I lived 5 hours away. The cons of boarding school is boredom. The fact that the only time you can truly get off campus on the weekends, which really sucks. It is all worth it in the end when you get your high school diploma. I don’t think I should give a list for this one, it is only what you truly believe. The only real pro is that boarding school changes your life, in the best way possible.
