I am trying to decide if I should get a GED or a High School diploma. I am 19 and I would like to start applying to colleges. WIll having a GED effect how colleges will look at my application? If I do get a high school diploma it will be through a program online. One of the schools I am going to apply to is University of Houston.

So.. GED or High School Diploma?

Most community colleges offer GED testing. You just sign up and take the test at one of their testing centers. If you don’t pass the GED exam, they also offer GED prep courses.

For the Houston CC, call 713.718.6011

As for whether it is better than a HS diploma – I got a GED and then went to college and law school so it didn’t hold me back. Your call.

As for the online HS – do even 10% of the students ever complete one of those courses?

Well this year we are going to have to be doing a career class and I want to become a Deaf Educator. I don’t know if we have an ASL class but to be an elementary school teacher would you just take the basic classes in high school?

In High School you would want to take ASL classes if any are offered. Unfortunately there isn’t much that a high school can teach you that will help you in this area. When you look for universities though you will want to look for a university will strong programs in Elementary Education, Special Education, Deaf studies, and Sign Language, because you will taking classes in all of these departments.

While you are in high school though I would suggest getting to know your Deaf community, if you don’t know anyone that is Deaf, try Meetup.com. This website can connect you to Deaf social clubs in your area. This is where you should start because its a good idea to understand the community and the people you will be serving before you start a college career towards it.

I graduated from High school in June 2009. I am currently in a community college trying to obtain my associates degree. I am graduating next year but I’m not applying to a university until 2013. How long will my high school transcript be valid if I obtain it from my high school this year?

Your HS transcripts are valid until the day you die.

What you should be concerned with are the classes you are taking at the community college. For some universities they put a ’shelf life’ on classes taken, regardless of whether it’s a college or a university. Most universities require you to take specific classes for your degree whether they are ‘general ed’ or ‘major’ courses. My experience is that they want these classes taken within 10 years of your degree or they want you to retake them. And so if you take a college class and then take a couple of years off before returning to school you are fine, now should you take 10-15 years off you might have to retake one or two classes.

hello,

High school transcripts are required at the time of admission at every level because your Date of Birth is mention in the high school certificate that is why it is essential. At higher level no will asked for your birth certificate but for those who have completed their high school that certificate is the proof of Date of Birth.

Thank you.

If you want to be a designer, I would recommend taking classes such as Architecture, construction, Building Codes, Auto CAD, 3D max, Revit, Photoshop and Illustrator. You will also need to know drafting and sketching. (hand rendering is also a plus!) These are programs that professionals use. Remember this is more than being a decorator! Its a lot of technical information especially if you want to do commercial work but its fun as well!

I’m a junior in high school and my time to decide what i want to do with my life is becoming shorter.
After HS, I’m hoping to major in Human Development/Family studies and I was wondering what type of classes I should take in my senior year of high school to help better prepare myself for my major.
My high school offers a TON of different classes and electives so all suggestions will be considered.
Thank you.

Knowing a field you want to go into is a GREAT start.

As for classes, anything in the social sciences will do. Especially psychology, sociology, anthropology. If your school has AP classes in those fields, take them!

When it comes to college/career, the best preparation is experience. Since you are interested in Human/Family issues, work with a non-profit in your area to get experience in dealing with human/family issues. Most careers in Human/family issues tends to be in the public sector/non-profits. And they tend to be competitive and require someone who is informed and committed to a cause. Showing commitment at an early age will help you do ( and make) alot.

take care!

How would I send my high school transcript to other colleges now that I am already in college? When I was in high school, I went directly to my guidance counselor and told her which colleges I wanted transcripts sent out to. Would I have to e-mail my old guidance counselor even though I’m not a student there anymore or does someone at my current college handle that now? Who is in charge now of sending out my high school transcripts now that I am in college?

If you have completed 24 or more credit hours at your current school all you have to do is have your college transcript sent to your new school. If the college you are transferring to wants your high school transcript for some reason I would call your high school and ask what you should do. It cannot hurt to e-mail your old guidance counselor. I hope this helps good luck with school!

Im a sophomore in high school, and would like to become an ultrasound technician. Im wondering if it would still be possible for me to become one if Im taking applied mathematics instead of algebra classes in high school? Also I would like to know what classes are recommended to take in high school?

High schools generally do not offer classes that will help prepare you for this field. Just take the necessary classes in high school and you’ll be fine. If there is an anatomy class offered, you may want to take that just to start learning some of the basics.

Once you graduate high school, you will need to look for an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ultrasound) program. By doing so, you will be registry-eligible when you finish the program (able to take your board exams so you can be registered), which is what will get you hired. Most of these programs are 2 year associate’s degrees offered at technical colleges. Good luck
