My son is still an infant so I have a lot of time to think about this. I was looking at schools for fun the other day and I think that private school would be the best option. I don’t want to do homeschooling and public schooling is fine but I just think the private school has the most pros. Are there any cons that you can think of?

Thank you
The school that we are looking at is a private elementary school. It isn’t a religious school and I don’t believe cost would be a problem for us.

1. They can learn just as much in a public school if the ones in your area are half way decent. I maintain that at least 75% of what children gain in the way of learning comes from home anyway. Motivated, involved parents who work with their children outside the school have more successful students… private school or not. I think one of the reasons private schools have a reputation for higher producing students is because people who send their children to private schools tend to be more involved parents. The same effort can be applied with a child in public school and they can thrive just as well as one in private school.

2. See #1 and realize how much money can be saved to put toward college, where you have no choice but to spend. If you spend all your money on private primary school now, it will be harder to send them to a good college.

3. Not all private schools are created equally. I had my daughters in one until my oldest was in second grade. I found out, once they got in public school, that the curriculum at the public school was tougher than the one in the private school. Pay CLOSE attention to the curriculum as compared to that in the public schools in your area. You may not be getting all that you think you’re paying for.

I come to find out that the guy I like went to an all-boys Catholic, private school. My mom and I agreed that it was likely that, because of this, he probably doesn’t know much about dealing with females and having relationships. I was wondering what are the pros and cons of dating a guy from an all-guys private school as opposed to dating a regular guy from a regular public school system, where exposure to females is concerned?

You may be wrong that a boy who attended a single-sex school doesn’t know about dealing with females and having relationships. In my area, the private single-sex schools have far more co-ed social events than the co-ed schools. The only thing that is different is that they spend most of their school hours with only other boys. They may however, spend some classes, and school extracurriculars (theater, sports/cheerleaders) with girls.

It seems at least as many boys and girls at single-sex schools have girlfriends as the kids at co-ed schools. My son knows kids at 20+ local private schools, and there really are no big differences between co-ed and single-sex students.

In my area, it’s common for adults who went to the single-sex schools to refer to attending school with someone of the opposite sex, because the relationship between the students, and schools, often called sister and brother schools, is so close and they saw each other all the time.

Besides, boys often have sisters and mothers — and that is where kids learn much about the opposite sex. And think about it, maybe boys who attend single-sex schools would appreciate girls more, than boys who see girls all the time.

Don’t judge people before you know them, they are not all the same just because of the school they went to, etc. What is he supposed to think about you? Public school girls often don’t have good reputations compared to the private school girls, if you know what I mean. Now that wouldn’t be a fair way to judge you, would it?

Good luck!

I want to start tutoring elementary school kids, but I’m not sure how to get my name out to people. Any ideas? Also, how much should I charge?

(1) If your area has any program set up for community volunteers to tutor elementary school kids for free, sign up and do that. Why? That will give you credibility. They will probably run a background check on you. They might also provide some brief training in how to tutor the elementary kids. So you can advertise that you are ALREADY a tutor in such and such Elementary School.

(2) Put up flyers in coffee shops. Lots of moms go to coffee shops in the mornings and afternoon.

(3) On your flyers, state your credentials and what you charge. State things such as: if an honor student; your GPA if it is high; subject you have all A’s in; any Advanced Placement classes you’ve taken; any academic awards won. Put nice photo of yourself on the flyer.

(4) Put ads on Craigslist, if there is one for your city or town.

(5) To decide on a price, do searches on Google and see what others are charging in your state or city or town.

(6) To be a tutor is an important position of trust. Peoples’ future are at stake. Make sure you do a good job!

If you are a very good student, you can do dual enrollment at the local college or even enroll a year early. There are several private colleges that will let you start early.

Hi i really want to be a secondary school history teacher when i am older what area of history do i need to study at college and then where do i go from there. Thanks

4 year degree and take the state certification test!

But, please think about a different academic focus. Too many social studies teachers already. Example: chemistry position opened and we received 3 resumes. An American history position opened and there were 87 resumes. Both positions were open for 3 days. Which teacher is more valuable and harder to find?

Do some research into this before you decide on becoming a history teacher.

I am interested in teaching or law and i am wondering what is the salary of a secondary school teacher. I do not want a career just for money and i just want to know. I would love teaching and i know i want to help children achieve success. I have the right grades as well.

Starting out, the salary would be around £20,000, rising eventually to roughly £30,000 per year. Of course, there is opportunity for promotion, such as faculty head, pastoral care / guidance and deputy head teacher / head teacher, in which case you would be likely to earn significantly more. Take a look at some vacancies on local authority websites and that should give you a better idea.

My son and I are currently at logger heads over which secondary school he should attend next year. He wants to go to the school where most of his friends are planning on going, even though the reputation is very poor and the ofstead report was quite damming. My preference is for another school, which is smaller and is well equipt, with a reasonable reputation (After all who doesn’t want their child in the best school available?). In your opinion who should get the final say?

let him have his way and bear the consequences of his decision. if forced, he will turn negative and blame everything on u. all we do is guide and facilitate n if he’s bright he will still get his As. so no worries, his future is his. sounds terrible but isnt better to have a happy family life with happy kids and happy moments than anger and resentment [which we had in ours which carried thru till their working lives - thats our regret] and they’re doing well , thank the powers that be!
all the best
