How important is participation in sports in high school for college admission?

I have never participated in high school sports and I’ve always wanted to do track and cross country but never got the chance to. Although, I am attending this high school in college program where I attend community college and receive both high school and college credits at the same time but I can still join high school activities. Is it even worth it? Or do other things such as community service and jobs too as important to them?

The purpose of extracurricular involvement is so that colleges can evaluate your committment, teamwork (common goal), and general involvement in your school community. These factors can easily be transferred to the college community, which is what the colleges want. If you are not athletically oriented, then try being a manager or stats person or join clubs/groups at your school. Volunteering is demonstrating your character in a larger community, like your town, state or nation. Try to demonstrate both extracurricular and volunteering.

I am a school counselor and have worked with hundreds of students and parents. The same questions about how to find the right college or plan for college keep coming up. I decided to set up some online classes (self paced) to answer many of your questions and activities to help in the process. My site is located at globalscholar.com and type in my name "Kerrie."

I’d say try to get involved in a volunteering organization or some extracurricular clubs – they don’t have to be sports oriented or even done through the school. I volunteered at an animal adoption agency for a year and a half and I put that on my college application.

As long as your GPA is 3.5 or better and your ACT/SAT scores are decent, you will have no trouble getting into most colleges. They just want to see that you are well rounded and willing to put yourself out there and try something new. A job will also look good because it shows that you can shoulder your own financial burden/responsibility.

  2. A lot of colleges offer scholarships if you’re in a sport…so that’s why they ask. So, it may be very important because that’s less money out of your pockets. However, you have dual credit classes. I don’t know if you had any AP credit…but if so…GREAT!! Internships and volunteer work is still needing even if you do participate in sports. I volunteered and interned during the summer….you can do sports during the school year. Yes, it’s worth it. As long as you have a lot of experience and you’re good at the sport.

Don’t stress yourself, though. Because I participated in clubs and activities during school. Yet, I have a full ride to college…I don’t pay anything…I interned, volunteer, had dual credit, and AP credit…So, it just depends.
    I hope this helps!!!!

  3. It all depends on who you are. If you’re planning on trying to get a scholarship for a specific sport, then yes it is right for you. Even if you don’t want to play a sport in college, it still looks good to universities that you did participate in athletics in high school, but its not for everyone and there are other alternatives to get involved with your high school community (i.e. National Honor Society, chess club, key club, etc.) so don’t worry if you haven’t done sports all through out high school, as long as you stayed involved you’ll be fine
