Can a public school in the US charge students with technology fees and REQUIRE them to rent laptops?
The laptops are rented through the school. Is there a certain limit public schools can charge their students for fees?
There have always been fees associated with public schools. Fees for field trips, fees to ride a school bus, book rental fees, book purchase fees and a variety of other fees that seem to nickel and dime you to death. Usually, low-income students fall under some program and may recieve discounted rates or in some cases costs may be waived. Check with your school district for more information. Education is priceless.
They can, if they (The schools) own them. But I’ve lived in the US all my life, and have never known a school, to do that.
But then most of the schools, including community colleges that have computer classes, use desk top computers.

It is a pretty stupid school district that goes with laptops. It would be cheaper to buy $300 desk top units in bulk and give them to the kids to take home and then use the same kind of units at school. Laptops are expensive and have a habit of getting stolen or broken.

There is a recent ruling in NY that schools cannot force students to buy those expensive scientific calculators but must provide them. I don’t know if this will be precedent outside of NY. In any case it certainly is an issue ,particularly for those who cannot afford the fees.
