Riz Khan – Schools killing creativity? – 10 Sep 08 – Part 1
Education is a terrible way to find out what you’re good at. Sound strange, right?
But think about this; how many of you are currently working in the subject you liked most in school. Not the one you excelled in, the one you liked.
In our very streamlined public education system, children around the world are taught the maths and sciences, but how many of them are taught art, painting or dance with the same vigour?
In our very streamlined public education system, children around the world are taught the maths and sciences, but how many of them are taught art, painting or dance with the same vigour?
Riz speaks with world renowned creativity and education expert Ken Robinson who strongly believes the current state of education may begin holistically but progressively focuses “on the head, and then just to one side.”

@collapseofthedollar Teachers don’t make a lot of money, either. I suppose that means they’re not necessary.

yeup the problems …
yeup the problems of our society can be traced back to one thing… we didn’t learn dance in school. i’m not sure about you but i think math and science are a of a lot more imortant than dance or music. it’s so unlikely that you’re going to make money or a career out of these things that there is a reason we teach other things instead of those.

I don’t think every …
I don’t think every kid should be put on full creative learning, but I believe ones who have talent and passion should be taught creativity. If you’re great with normal school work, then let them learn it and love it.

very interesting …
very interesting interview! i’m doing youth work now for a year and in my experience i’m struck by the amount of restriction that is placed on people, the lack of imagination that seems to be allowed, and the aim of conformity

I believe it is …
I believe it is nearly impossible to actually teach creativity. I think you need to already have a creative mindset to be creative, but I think the schools could do more to harbor the children who already have the creative thoughts. I myself am an artist and very creative, and I almost failed out of high school because all of my tests ended up with many colorful pictures, but not a lot of work done on them.

The answer is …
The answer is simple, art, painting and dance are all for faggots.

Thank goodness for magnet schools. But yeah, he’s so right. The Arts are hardly incorporated in standard schools.

who do you think …
who do you think moves the mail and cleans the toilets already? but you do touch on a critical point… putting dance on the same level as english may be a whole new way to dumb down the masses even further
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
nigel you summed up …
nigel you summed up my assessment perfectly. but my conclusion is that creativity is NOT a desirable trait for mass populace. obese vacant consumers are desirable, so long as our chief exports are fiat bills and bombs.
meaningful instruction is intended to be exclusive to the elite… how else are they to stay on top?
of course in my opinion people can clean up their own shit, forget division of labor. hopefully we are in the death throes of the industrial age and into information age finally!

Apply affirmative …
Apply affirmative action to schools an academic classes. For example lets say there’s a school with math honors classes. The majority of the students are white not by any purpose. So somebody comes along and says there isn’t enough ethnicity in those honors classes so they put people who don’t meet the requirements into that class effectively dumbing it down. Thats whats wrong with the education system.

A nicely unfounded …
A nicely unfounded perspective. One of the worst things the government could do is limit the pool from which thinkers can originate. Not every janitor is upset with their work or hates their position. Not every janitor has to be a reject of the education system.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
The world will …
The world will always have the lower classes that will never be an issue. But the point I take from this is that a person who cleans toilets can in fact be happy if they find something else that gives them purpose as well (something that the ’system’ doesn’t allow them to appreciate: dance for instance)
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I think you maybe …
I think you maybe missing one point. He is saying that the system tells people that the only place to search for passion is in specified areas (math and science). In other words, he is not saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist a janitor over a businessman. He is saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist not an artist… and thus that person never really finds true happiness.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
The public system …
The public system is because its supposed to be fucked. If they educated everyone and inspired everyone to do what they want, their wouldn’t be janitors to clean up. The gov has no goal on improving education because if they did everyone would wake up and realize how crappy they have it and upset the power balance of the society. dogs become pigs and the pigs beget sheep and so the toilet water turns around the bowl.

Veggieforce, you …
Veggieforce, you are talking rubbish.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Those that do not …
Those that do not value education are not a voice of reason, they are the voice of emotion. I agree that the expression of emotion is important (i.e. the music, dancing and the arts), but what happens when you strip the education system of all things academic? You end up with a ridiculous amount of super emotional people with no life skills who can’t take care of themselves. If the world consisted solely of musicians and artists, there would be nobody to clean toilets or serve food or move mail.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
You get what you …
You get what you pay for. in = out. Its shameful that we don’t spend more money on education. Teachers have one of the most under-appreciated and under-paid professions in the world. And as far as teachers that “hate” their jobs are concerned, you try dealing with 30 kids every day who love to make your job difficult by acting up, only to have someone tell you that you’re not doing a good enough job teaching their children.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Public education is …
Public education is only meant to help people with the most rudimentary areas of knowledge for functionality in society. You may be the best musician in the world, but if you can’t balance a checkbook how will you survive? Last time I checked an Ebmaj7 chord won’t land you a high paying career. You have to have some communication and networking skills for that. My point is that we cannot simply say that the system is flawed and blame the teachers of the world.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
We won’t have any …
We won’t have any idea that we enjoy math, science, music, literature etc. unless we are exposed to these subjects in some way or another. If you enjoy something, you pursue it to further your knowledge about it. You seek out other like-minded individuals that posses a greater understanding of a field so that you can absorb what they know and build upon it. Hence the reason that higher education exists. Public education is only meant as a means to educate the masses in a very minimal way.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
People criticize …
People criticize teachers for not doing enough to expand education. I’m tired of hearing people complaining about teachers that don’t “teach”. First off, you are missing the whole point of this video if that is your perspective. Learning styles are diverse and dynamic. How is a teacher supposed to cater to the educational desires of a classroom of 30 different styles of learning? For that matter, how do people learn that they are interested in a particular subject?
