We won't have any ...
We won't have any idea that we enjoy math, science, music, literature etc. unless we are exposed to these subjects in some way or another. If you enjoy something, you pursue it to further your knowledge about it. You seek out other like-minded individuals that posses a greater understanding of a field so that you can absorb what they know and build upon it. Hence the reason that higher education exists. Public education is only meant as a means to educate the masses in a very minimal way.

People criticize ...
People criticize teachers for not doing enough to expand education. I'm tired of hearing people complaining about teachers that don't "teach". First off, you are missing the whole point of this video if that is your perspective. Learning styles are diverse and dynamic. How is a teacher supposed to cater to the educational desires of a classroom of 30 different styles of learning? For that matter, how do people learn that they are interested in a particular subject?

You get what you ...
You get what you pay for. in = out. Its shameful that we don't spend more money on education. Teachers have one of the most under-appreciated and under-paid professions in the world. And as far as teachers that "hate" their jobs are concerned, you try dealing with 30 kids every day who love to make your job difficult by acting up, only to have someone tell you that you're not doing a good enough job teaching their children.

Public education is ...
Public education is only meant to help people with the most rudimentary areas of knowledge for functionality in society. You may be the best musician in the world, but if you can't balance a checkbook how will you survive? Last time I checked an Ebmaj7 chord won't land you a high paying career. You have to have some communication and networking skills for that. My point is that we cannot simply say that the system is flawed and blame the teachers of the world.

The public system ...
The public system is because its supposed to be fucked. If they educated everyone and inspired everyone to do what they want, their wouldn't be janitors to clean up. The gov has no goal on improving education because if they did everyone would wake up and realize how crappy they have it and upset the power balance of the society. dogs become pigs and the pigs beget sheep and so the toilet water turns around the bowl.

Those that do not ...
Those that do not value education are not a voice of reason, they are the voice of emotion. I agree that the expression of emotion is important (i.e. the music, dancing and the arts), but what happens when you strip the education system of all things academic? You end up with a ridiculous amount of super emotional people with no life skills who can't take care of themselves. If the world consisted solely of musicians and artists, there would be nobody to clean toilets or serve food or move mail.

The world will ...
The world will always have the lower classes that will never be an issue. But the point I take from this is that a person who cleans toilets can in fact be happy if they find something else that gives them purpose as well (something that the 'system' doesn't allow them to appreciate: dance for instance)

I think you maybe ...
I think you maybe missing one point. He is saying that the system tells people that the only place to search for passion is in specified areas (math and science). In other words, he is not saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist a janitor over a businessman. He is saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist not an artist... and thus that person never really finds true happiness.

nigel you summed up ...
nigel you summed up my assessment perfectly. but my conclusion is that creativity is NOT a desirable trait for mass populace. obese vacant consumers are desirable, so long as our chief exports are fiat bills and bombs.

meaningful instruction is intended to be exclusive to the elite... how else are they to stay on top?

of course in my opinion people can clean up their own shit, forget division of labor. hopefully we are in the death throes of the industrial age and into information age finally!
