What would be a good course to take at University to become an art teacher at secondary school level?
I am at college now studying the National Diploma Art and Design. I also study English Literature and English Language at home. I want to become an art teacher at secondary school level, and I was wondering what would be the best approach?
Any input would be helpful at this stage.
You could study an Art degree then do a PGCE after to qualify you as a teacher

Its good that your studying English because to be a teacher I think you need a certain standard of English and Maths (GCSE at least, I think).
It would probably be best simply to take an Art course, like Fine Art or Art and Design as if you enjoy art, you will do well at these and hopefully be able to teach, or even become an artist!
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

I would go to your University catalog and see if they have teacher certification through your school. If not, you would have to get your secondary teaching certification in addition. I was an art major and an English minor, and I got my secondary ed. certificate on top of my major and minor requirements. I was at a large university, and if you wanted to be an art teacher you had to major in Art Education. This would have excluded me from taking many of the studio classes that I was interested in. I wanted to major in Art, not education. I ended up transferring to a smaller school where the secondary ed program applied to whatever major you were focusing on.
Usually to teach at the middle school or high school level, you only have to have a certain # of college credits in the area that you will be teaching and you may have to pass a state test in your subject to get your teaching certificate in that state. I was able to certify in both art and English and I taught both subjects my first year.
As far as art classes, if you can take some kind of art education classes, it would be great, but I’d take the art classes you are most interested in.
